Have you been to Bath lately?

I know this blog is called Hip Shapes and Bristol Fashion but sometimes I can’t help blogging about other great places to shop. Bath, is only a 15 minute train ride from Bristol and it offers a great shopping experience, it’s one of my favourite cities for shopping, along with Bristol of course.

The great thing about being a totally independent personal stylist (by which I mean that I’m not tied to a shopping mall and am not expected to take X amount of money per client..I work completely independent of anyone) is that I will take my clients to the shops that suit them best; this means for their shape, size, style and budget. And more and more, I find I’m taking clients shopping in Bath.

Bath was the place to go for fashion and pampering in Georgian times and today, things haven’t changed. The city is home to the brilliant Fashion Museum and offers shoppers a fabulous selection of independent boutiques and delicious cafes to recuperate in, between purchases. Culture, stunning architecture, fabulous style and great food all within walking distance, it doesn’t get much better!

Over the last few years Bath has held a weeklong event ‘Bath In Fashion’ celebrating fashion and style in the city, it’s a great way to discover what Bath has to offer, and this year’s event - Sunday 25th March to Sunday 1 April 2012 - looks to the best yet.

Guest celebrities from the world of fashion include shoe god and Bath resident Manolo Blahnik, who will be in conversation with Iain R Webb at the Holburne Museum, Tuesday 29th March. The Holburne Museum will also host master milliner Stephen Jones in conversation with Sarah Mower MBE, contributor to American Vogue on Friday 30th March. A special retrospective exhibition at the Holburne of Stephen Jones’ work will also be a fashion highlight.

Don’t miss out on a seat at the catwalk shows from Spring/Summer ’12 Collections paraded at the glittering Guildhall and designer fashions at the Assembly Rooms. Bath in Fashion 2012’s guest designer, Amanda Wakeley will be bringing her show directly from London Fashion Week, to the art deco Ballroom at the Forum.

Julian Roberts will be presenting a Subtraction Cutting Masterclass on Saturday 31st March demonstrating his unique approach to pattern cutting. Karen Nicol will be running a workshop, sharing her enthusiasm for embellishment showing techniques for cutwork, pleating, sewn strip, sequins and tufts.

Biba fans are in for a treat with a screening of “Beyond Biba” at the Little Theatre Cinema, Wednesday 28th March. Barbara Hulanicki who created the brand will be flying in from Miami to introduce the film. Sir Christopher Frayling, former Chair of the Arts Council is to introduce the classic film “Funny Face” starring screen legend Audrey Hepburn.

Other speakers include Roger Saul who created Mulberry and has now established a designer outlet centre, the Kilver Court Emporium as well as Matteo Alessi. The week culminates with Vintage Sunday on 1st April with a Vintage Fashion Fair and The Secret Tea Party at Green Park Station with best dressed outfit chosen by Pearl Lowe.

Three Way's To Wear...

This is something that I’ve wanted to do for a while now and I hope it will become a regular feature on Hip Shapes and Bristol Fashion. I came up with the idea when I was pulling together the post about this maxi skirt.   I mentioned then, that I will only buy something new, if I know it will go with at least three other items I’ve got back at home. Well ‘Three Ways’ to Wear’ is an extension of this.   Some weeks I’ll illustrate three ways to wear a key item and others will focus on a particular trend. I love the challenge of pulling together looks and outfits using the same item of clothing and proving to you that you don’t need to have an extensive collection of clothes to create countless outfits…just some imagination and a pair of fresh eyes.

As a personal stylist I’ve been through so many wardrobes and while they’re all so different from each other (one of the many things I love about my job is the variety), there are a couple of things that I see again and again. The first is there are always at least three or four items hanging in the wardrobe un-worn with the labels still on and the other, is that some items are only ever worn a few times and in the same way.

I want this regular feature to inspire people to experiment more with their wardrobe, to be more creative and not to be afraid to try something new.   As well as this, I’m hoping it will force me to put the time aside to regularly look at my own wardrobe, something that I’ve enjoyed doing with the challenges I’ve done, but that normally comes last after all my clients wardrobes. (On that note, I still want to do more challenges, so if you have one for me, then get in touch!). So, what do you think?

Three ways to wear a blouse.

I’m a huge fan of blouses; I find them such a versatile item and perfect for layering. This one is from Monsoon Fusion, a make that’s recently caught my eye. I love the colour and the cute heart print (which surprises me as I’m not normally drawn to clothes or jewellery with hearts). The first outfit is fairly simple, I’ve paired the blouse with a pair of skinny jeans and heels. I love the shape of the top so I’ve kept the rest of the outfit fairly simple. I really like the collar and the little bow round the neck so thought I’d try to make a feature of it by adding the broach.

My second outfit is much more of an everyday look. It’s a bit blurry, but I’m wearing my leather trainers by Ash with jeans and have tucked the top in, finishing it off with a studded belt and cardi.

And finally, I’m wearing the blouse under this crochet jumper with a skirt and flats. The collar works quite well around the neckline of the jumper and I like the way you can see a little bit of green through the holes. I think my favourite look is the middle one, what about you?

Have I missed wearing leopard print?

I hoped that I’d end this challenge feeling inspired and looking forward to wearing my leopard print items again, but I’ve come down with a horrid cold - my throat feels like it’s been sand papered and I feel sick -so I’m just moping around in my pj’s.

I did manage to pull together an outfit for my last day, but I think you can probably tell that I wasn’t really up for it.

Anyway, the question I need to ask myself is: have I missed my leopard print items? YES! But that’s only really because most of my footwear is of the animal variety, so I’ve been left with a very limited selection of shoes to wear all week.

It’s not until you take everything out of your wardrobe and really look at what you’ve got, that you can see what you’re repeatedly buying. I’ve been through so many different wardrobes and know that most people get in to the habit of buying particular items over and over again (the most popular being jeans, black trousers or cardigans) but I didn’t think I was doing the same. Well, it turns out I am.

So, while I’ve missed my print ever so much, I’ve been able to determined the gaps in my wardrobe that if I fill (bank account willing) I will be able to create an ever more versatile wardrobe… all in all, it was a very worthwhile exercise.

Things have been a bit rushed this weekend, so I’ve only just got round to posting my outfit from yesterday. I’m wearing the maxi skirt from this post and have teamed it with a simple white jumper, tan belt and mix of bangles. I wanted to wear something quite relaxed and comfortable and this just fitted that perfectly.

Following on from my last couple of posts, I wanted to try out a different shot. Instead of just standing there I wanted to try an ‘action shot’ :)

Days in the office are the perfect excuse to experiment with my outfits a little, but I’ve got to be careful as I can get a bit carried away and I’ve got loads to do today. I bought this vintage dress about a year ago in York, when Al and I visited for a weekend. If you’ve never been, it’s well worth a visit it’s crammed full with quirky shops and vintage boutiques. You'll probably notice that this dress is a little different for me as it’s quite a bright colour and is patterned, two things that I don’t wear a lot. I’d normally team this dress with some leopard print loafers...I love the way they clash, but today that’s not allowed so it’s black flats instead. I felt a little girly in it so added a studded waist belt to give the look some edge.

I managed to convince Hendrix to be in the shots with me again, I love him being in them with me, I think it makes the photos far more interesting than them just being of me.

Despite the loud print and colour, this is actually quite a versatile dress, it looks great in the day with flats, but I can also swap my flats for some statement shoes and it’s great for something more dressy. My favourite discovery though, is that I can wear a skirt over the top of it…

Day four and I'm trying out some different shots

I’ve been getting a little bit bored with taking my photo in front of a plain white wall so today I took the tripod around the house and tried out a few different locations. I really want to start taking some more interesting shots, to think about the composition and the lighting and not just whether I should smile, look away or look at the camera. I think I've got some learning to do.
How do you take your photos? I don’t have anyone around in the day who can take my photo so I use Al’s grandpa’s old tripod and put my camera on timer. I’ll set up the shot, press the button and then run in front of the lens and pose in one awkward way or another. I’ll do this about ten times in the hope that there’ll be one decent shot, any longer and I just feel silly. There must be a better way!

I’ve heard that it’s possible to get a wireless remote to take pictures with, so I may have to invest in one of these if they’re not too expensive.

Anyway, my outfit. Well, my morning was spent at Cribbs Causeway sourcing the last few bits and pieces for my next column in Folio. It was a real test of my will power, the shops are starting to fill up with spring stock and it’s such a welcome relief from all the winter stock that’s STILL hanging around.

Chunky knits

I know this isn’t particularly stylish, but this is what I wore today. I had the wardrobe report to do for my client from yesterday so this, along with my next column for Folio magazine and pulling together my spring newsletter, pretty much kept me glued to my computer for most of the day. I know it’s not too cold right now, but I got quite chilly in my little office so as the hours passed, I reached for more layers.

I love layering different textures up and when they’re chunky and warm it’s so cosy! I’m pear shape and being smaller on the top than the bottom can sometimes make it tricky to work chunky knits, but by making sure that the under layer is fitted and can be seen, I think I can get away with layering chunkier looser items on top.

Fall back outfit

Well day two of my challenge is nearly over. I had to remove all my leopard print items from sight this morning, to avoid the temptation of wearing them. I had a lovely new client booked in today for a wardrobe consultation so I’m looking a little smarter than I did yesterday. If I’m seeing a client, I like to try and polish my look a little, it helps get my head’s in the right space. It has to still look and feel like me though, otherwise it just doesn’t work.

This outfit is one of those fall back one’s, perfect for a day like today when I all seemed to want to wear is leopard print. You all know about my love for black skinny’s well here I am in them again, they’re from Donna Ida and are definately an investment piece. I saved my pennies for these and they’re worth every single one of them! My blouse is another wardrobe staple; it can be worn casually, smart, or dressed up for a night out. All I need to do is change the accessories around a little. It’s one of those items that I think everyone should have in their wardrobe, you don’t have to go for a style that ties at the neck like this one, there are so many different styles around, for all body shapes. I can just about get away wearing this blouse un-tucked but I think it’s a more polished look when it’s tucked in, it also gives it a bit more shape.

The jacket has been in my wardrobe for about three years now, and yes, it’s another key item. I find it so useful for this time of year when it’s not cold enough to wear my winter coat, but not warm enough to go without. It works well with denim and I can throw it over a dress, it’s so versatile.

I didn’t start this post intending it to be about key items for the wardrobe, but it seems to have turned out that way…maybe it’s because I did a wardrobe consultation today which is all about identifying key items and building on them to develop a hard working wardrobe.

Oh, and if you’re wondering why my dog is in so many of the photos, it’s because I took them as soon as I got home to catch the last of the daylight, when normally I’d be rushing out on a walk with him. It was his way of letting me know that he was ready, but to be honest, I didn't mind I quite liked the distraction in front of the lens.

And these are just the items I've got with me, there's more in storage. It’s got to the point now, where if I’m not wearing any leopard print, friends ask me if I’m okay!

If you read my blog a couple of weeks ago then you may have noticed my 7 day challenge, set by my husband. Well if not, and you’d like to take a peek, then you can see it here. After I’d finished I had some great comments and tweets from people saying how much they enjoyed it, it made my week! (thanks!!) I was so amazed that people actually followed me on my challenge and wanted to talk about it. I really enjoyed the challenge and the excuse to pay my own wardrobe some attention for a change so when it was all over, I asked you to suggest another challenge for me to take on, and you did!

So what’s my next challenge (as if you’ve not already figured it out)? To go without leopard print, for a whole week.

I bet you’re reading this and thinking that’s got to be an easy challenge. Well, you know what, it really isn’t. Most of my footwear is of the leopard variety, and my warmest coat is too…I’m hoping the weather stays mild. I’ve got myself into a bit of a style rut when it comes to print; I wear a lot of plain clothing and black – I just love black and there’s nothing wrong with that, but when I try to introduce some print, I somehow end up veering towards the animal kind. So I’m hoping that this might force me to try other prints and develop my style a little further.

I was in my office all day for the first day of my new challenge. It was an unusually productive day, I actually managed to catch up with my emails, tweak my blog, pull together two wardrobe reports for two new clients I had last week and prep for another new client I have tomorrow.

The only time I left the house today was to walk Hendrix, I waited until the sun popped out for a few minutes, took some photos and then went for a walk. Luckily the sun was out long enough for me to take a half decent shot, although it didn’t last, Hendrix and I got rained on within five minutes of starting our walk.

I wore black jeans from Donna Ida, sneakers from Ash (a bargain from outnet.com last summer), black jumper from Warehouse and a huge vintage scarf. My bag is by Angel Jackson.

Winter wedding in the Lake District

Regular readers will know that last week I wrote about what to wear to a winter wedding as I was heading to one myself. If you missed it, you can read it here. I talked about reviewing your wardrobe and reminding yourself what you’ve got before going out to buy a new outfit, using my own wardrobe as an example. I thought you might like to know what I ended up wearing.

The wedding was in the Lake District, I’d been there before but I’d forgotten quite how stunning it is! We arrived on the Friday evening and had Saturday morning before the wedding to explore…

The wedding itself was lovely, and Gina looked beautiful. Her dress had been altered to include a piece of her mum’s lace wedding dress, what a lovely idea! She also had these wellies in case of emergency.

I know it’s nice to buy something new for a special occasion, but I love to get out some of my old favourites and wear them again. I wore my Whistles dress, Hobbs shoes and fur shrug, all of which I’ve had for yonks but made me feel great!

I know I look a little uncomfortable, but it was freezing and there were a group of people getting kitted up for a hike right in front of me.

Winter Wedding

I’m going to a wedding in the lake district this weekend, (I'm actually writing this in the car on the way there) I can’t wait! I love weddings. I love the romance, I love the dressing up and I love dancing to the cheesy wedding tunes. I normally know exactly what to wear, but with the wedding being at the beginning of January and in the depths of the Lake District, it’s not been so easy to pull together an outfit.

I’ve recently booked in quite a few clients looking to get outfits sorted for weddings in the next couple of months, so I thought it might be useful to write a post about what to wear, and how to find it. If I struggled, then I’m sure I’m not the only one.

The first problem with getting sorted for a winter wedding is that the stock isn’t very inspiring. The best time to find an outfit is either before the sales hit, in November, or leaves it as late as possible, and wait for the new collections to come through. If you’re looking before the sales you’ll probably be sifting through a mass of eveningwear that’s in for the Party season and, well, leaving it till last minute, that can be very stressful. Add to this complication, the fact that the weather will be cold and (most likely) wet, and we’ve got a difficult event to dress for.

The first thing to do is to go and open your wardrobe, and remind yourself what you’ve got in there. Sometimes the perfect outfit is staring you in the face, you just can’t see it. Pull out anything that you think might work, this was my haul…

Not all of these are obviously weddingy, but then I’m being open minded, and with a little styling, they might just work.

Now for the fun part, start to mix and match them a little. Try different combinations and a variety of accessories. Take photos if it helps. If you still can’t find the right look, then think about whether or not you need to buy a whole new outfit, or whether the addition of a new pair of shoes will do the trick. If it’s a whole new outfit then that’s fine, but at least you know you’ll not be wasting your money on something you’ve already got hanging in the wardrobe.

If you need to go shopping then here are my top tips to help you find the perfect outfit.

1. It’s going to be cold, so think about your hosiery. There are some great choices around now, my favourites are Wolford and Falke but they’re not cheap, so head to Marks and Spencer if you want to save a few pennies. Opt for a nice high denier as this will be the warmest, it also holds the leg beautifully.

2. Think about your footwear, a strappy pair of sandals might look great at a summer wedding but in the winter you’ll just freeze. How about going for a pair of fabulous knee high boots with your dress? It can look very elegant and you’ll be able to wear a pair of warm socks inside without anyone knowing. If you don’t want to wear boots, then go for a sturdier pair, which will give you more coverage like a pair of shoe boots.

3. If you want to wear a thin fabric, then wear a good quality slip underneath for a bit of warmth and the added bonus that it will help give a smooth line under un-forgiving fabrics.

4. You may end up doing some standing around outside, especially if there are lots of photos to be taken so give some thought to your coat. This will make or break your outfit, so it needs to be right. There’s nothing worse than spending ages pulling together the perfect look and then throwing on any old coat. If you don’t have the right one, then now is the time to find one in the last of the sales.

5. Embrace the fur trend! I intend to wrap up in a faux fur coat for ultimate warmth and style. If you don’t want to go, full on fur, then there are fur collars and tippets that look just as good.

6. Avoid wearing a lightweight hat or fascinator that will more than likely end up blowing away. The shops are currently full of wide brim hats, fedoras, and cloches in an array of colours, these will be far more fitting, and may keep you that little bit warmer.

7. Wear a pair of glamorous gloves. There’s plenty to choose from, but my favourite is a long leather pair like these.

8. Try and buy something that you might be able to wear again. If you opt for separates, then think about splitting these up and teaming them with something else.

Vintage shopping in Frome

I had the afternoon off yesterday, so I took the opportunity to go to Frome. My job is quite seasonal so I like to make the most of my relatively quiet January. I’d heard great things about the shopping in Frome, I was promised vintage shops and quirky boutiques a plenty and I wasn’t disappointed!

I know this is a blog all about Bristol (and sometimes Bath) but Frome’s not really that far away and I just have to share my new discoveries with you.

The area you want to make a bee line for is St Catherines. There are around 100 shops in this area, but I wanted to share my favourites with you.

There was a wall full of sewing books along one side of the shop to inspire me even more. I’ll definitely be popping back with a list of things to get.

This is one for the guys, although the home wear and gifts are great for us girls too (I wish I’d bought one of the underlay bags). It’s so refreshing to see an independent boutique for guys, selling something different from the high-street, something a little less obvious. Anthony who owns the shop makes his own bags and cushions, and these are showcased alongside some great clothing and army surplus.

I know it’s not very obvious, but I do have a girly side, I just like to mix it with a bit of rock and edge. Truly Sopel appealed to my girly side. The shop was styled like a boudoir, complete with bed and wardrobe. The bed was piled high with handmade cushions and the wardrobe, with cute little floral cropped tops, reminiscent of something you might have worn as a little girl. I couldn’t resist going into this shop, the windows were bursting with vintage dresses and shoes selling great quality vintage clothing that sits alongside current designers Orion London, Olga De Polga & Spaghetti Western. If you like vintage hand bags, then this is the shop for you.

This is another vintage shop, just down from Poot selling vintage clothing, retro toys and china along with some gorgeous, giant leather doctors bags. I fell in love with a huge carpet bag but, with it being so soon after Christmas I’m going to have to wait a little. Fingers crossed it’s still there when I go back.

Yet another vintage shop selling great quality items (I was loving going into vintage shop after vintage shop!). I spotted a couple of Burberry coats, and some beautiful silk scarfs (Pierre Cardin and Hermes no less) for £20. The clothes were in such good condition, they were clean and obviously very pre-loved.

So, you see, a visit to Frome is essential, especially if you love vintage shops!

I found a bargain...

I don’t normally go anywhere near the sales. I spend so much time in the shops with clients that when the sales finally come round I’ve seen enough of the stock and know that the best has probably been and gone. However, last weekend we had to pop to Cribbs Causeway so I ventured into a few shops to see the new collections that are starting to come through, and guess what? I was totally side tracked by the sale rails. I spotted this skirt in the Warehouse sale, I’d bought it in red back in the summer and it was such a useful skirt, so when I saw it was an amazing £7, it had to be mine.

I’m sure you’ve heard me say this before, but I only buy something new if it will go with at least three other things already in my wardrobe. I know this probably sounds boring, but as a result, I’ve got very little in my wardrobe that I don’t wear!

So, to prove that it goes with a few things I already own, I thought I’d pull together some outfits for this. I could have made more outfits, but the lighting was starting to get really bad, so I called it a day.

This is my first outfit and I think it’s my favourite. I’ve teamed it with an ancient cardigan of mine that’s seen better days (I just can’t make myself get rid of it), I breathed new life into it by wearing it back to front. I love the neckline on it worn this way, it broadens my narrow shoulders. I like to wear maxi skirts in a boho/grungy/rock kinda way, so to finished the look I combined the skirt with these studded boots and vintage belt.

Here’s another look. I love this leather jacket, any opportunity to wear it and I will. This silk top is a buy from Topshop a couple of years back, and the boots are from Ash (I spotted them on outnet.com and couldn’t resist them). I’m also wearing one of my favourite necklaces. If I don’t know what to wear then I’ll always go to this, it goes with everything and even better than that, it was made by one of my best friends Jane. Sometimes I like to be a little more girly so I thought I’d try and pull together a different look to the last two. I’m wearing this dress under the skirt so that it looks like a top. I think it works quite well, although it’s definitely not an everyday outfit and I’m far more comfortable in something a little more casual or edgy.

How to avoid costly sales shopping disasters.

Back in December, Suzanne Savill from The Bristol Evening Post interviewed me for an article she was doing about successfully shopping the sales. It’s so easy to get carried away in the sales, so just in case you missed the article and to make sure that your bargain really is a bargain, I thought I’d share the interview here. Do you have any tips or advice?

Suzanne: Do people need to take a different approach to sales shopping compared to going shopping at other times – and if so why?

Me: Yes! Shopping during the sales is a totally different experience to shopping at any other time of year. It’s not for the faint hearted you need good stamina. Not only do retailers make the most of every available space, cramming the shelves and rails full with reduced stock, but the shops are busier than they’ve ever been before. You’ll find yourself fighting other people for car park spaces, personal space and of course, the best bargains. There may even be the odd elbow fight. If you find shopping difficult mid season, then shopping during the sales is enough to bring you out in a rash!

Suzanne: What are some of the most useful tips you can give about going shopping during the sales?

Me: As a personal stylist, I spend a lot of time taking people shopping. I’ve picked up lots of tips over the years and know exactly where to go, and what to source for each client. I also know that when it comes to shopping during the sales, some of you find it really stressful, so here are my top ten tips to get you working the sale rails like a pro.

Top tips
1. Start early and do your research. If you know what items you want to buy. Start tracking them online before the sales so you’re in with a chance of getting your size when the price is slashed. Maybe even ring the store to see if it’s in stock before you venture out.

2. Use the sales as an opportunity to invest in good quality items that you wouldn’t normally be able to afford.
3. Be organised and work out what’s really missing from your wardrobe. This isn’t the time to try umpteen different outfits on, you need to make a list and stick to it.

4. Get to the shops nice and early. It always amazes me how quiet the shops are first thing.
5. Keep focused. It’s very easy to get seduced by slashed prices, those bright red sigs are very persuasive!

6. Before you buy something make sure it goes with three things you already own. If it doesn’t then the chances are that you’ll get it home, not know what to put it with and will never wear it.

7. Be sensible. There’s a tendency to panic buy, especially as most shops don’t allow you to put items on hold while you think about it. If you find yourself 'umming' and 'erring' think to yourself ‘do I really love it, would I buy it if it was full price’? If not then put it back.

8. Check the returns policy. Sometimes this differs during sale time, so check that you can return it if you get it home and change your mind.
9. Stick to your budget. It’s so easy to get caught up in the shopping frenzy and go over budget without realising. Check the price before you hand over your money, and keep a note of what you’ve already spent.

10. Listen to your head not heart. If you absolutely love something but think it might not be quite right for you, leave it. Something’s just aren’t going to suit you no matter how much love them.

Suzanne: What are some of the biggest mistakes that people make when shopping in the sales?
Me: Everyone loves a bargain and it’s very easy to get carried away in the sales, but a bargain is only a bargain if you actually wear it, otherwise you’re just wasting your money. The biggest mistakes people usually make when shopping the sales, are buying something in the wrong size because it’s a bargain (with the intention of shrinking into it) or buying random items that they’d never normally wear...and never wearing them. Statistics show that the average woman will spend a whopping £13,500 on clothes in her lifetime that she’ll never wear. I have no doubts that shopping in the sales is the biggest single contributor to this.
Suzanne: Have you ever had any disasters shopping in the sales, and if so what?

Me: I once bought a pair of really cute Lulu Guinness pumps in the sale. They were about 70% off - such a bargain! Only they were a size too small and I could only just squeeze my feet. I thought I’d be able to stretch them, but of course I couldn’t. I ended up selling them on eBay.

Suzanne: What have been some of your best bargains in the sales?

Me: If you know what you’re doing you can bag some great bargains. I’m always on the lookout for premium denim at reduced costs. Other things worth hunting down are accessories, classic knitwear, footwear (in particular a good pair of winter boots) and evening dresses. All of these items are in abundance in the January sales, and all are key items for every wardrobe.

Suzanne: Have you ever had to do personal sales shopping, and if so what is your approach?

Me: The best time to buy winter clothes is actually during October and November, before the winter weather sets in. The high-street’s seasons don’t run alongside the weathers, so you’ll tend to find that when the weather starts to get really cold, the shops are coming to the end of their autumn/winter season, the sales are starting and the shops are preparing for the spring collections. I find that most people don’t start to think about their winter wardrobe until the weather gets cold and as a result, I tend to get quite busy just as the sales start. While I try to avoid taking clients shopping during the sales (the stock becomes very fragmented and it’s often hard to source the correct sizes) I often find myself having to. I’ve built up a good working relationship with the local retailers over the years and this helps to make it a more enjoyable and successful experience than it might otherwise be.

It’s been weeks since my last post…Happy New Year! I hope you all had a lovely Christmas and celebrated New Year in style?

I had a lovely time, my hubbie and I spent a couple of weeks traveling around the UK (Willerby, Hull, Hornsea, Newcastle, Harrogate, Buxton and Bath) visiting family which was great, but we’re both exhausted now! Ooh, and my sister and her boyfriend got engaged!!!

I’ve got a couple of posts to upload over the next couple of days but before I do, I felt it right to start off the New Year with this one. I’ve really enjoyed reading everyone’s New Year resolution posts; there are some really inspiring ones, they put mine to shame but every year I give myself a long list of resolutions, and every year I either loose the list, or my enthusiasm fades. Terrible, I know! This year, I thought that instead of giving myself a list of unachievable resolutions, I’d give myself just one, so I can really focus on it and try and succeed. This year I’m going to be more organised – not very original I know, but something I need to work on in my personal life and with my business.

My business has really taken off over the last year or so and I’m so proud of what I’ve achieved, but there are some instance when I know that I could have made my life a little easier if only I’d just been more organised. My blog is very much a part of my business. I started Hip Shapes And Bristol Fashion over three years ago (I can’t believe it’s been running for that long!) initially to promote my business and help build awareness of me and my business locally, but over the years I’ve started to see my blog as more than this. I really love blogging and enjoy being a part of the blogging community – going to the My Street Chic bloggers party was great. I’m starting to get comments on my posts now (thank you!), am always looking at ways to improve my blog, and am starting to find it easier to come up with ideas for new content, but I think I need to start taking it a little more seriously, be more organised and put some proper structure in place.
It's a runing joke in the family that I always loose things or forget things, so you see, being more organised is going to be quite a task. It will need to encompass every aspect of my life. So wish me luck and if you’ve got any advice, PLEASE tell me!

Was my seven day challenge worth it?

Despite my constant moaning about not being able to wear my jeans, I’ve actually enjoyed this challenge. It’s been great to be forced to look at my clothes in a new light. As a personal stylist I spend a lot of time going through other peoples wardrobes. I remove the items that don’t work, discuss what shapes and styles of clothing work for them and their shape and then mix and match a selection of outfits using only their current items, to create a collection of outfits that they didn’t realise were in there. I’m constantly telling people that they don’t need lots of clothes to look good, they just need the key pieces and to understand how to mix and match effectively.
I love that I can show people how to wear more of their wardrobe and how to pull together some quite different looks without buying any new clothes, but I don’t ever put the time aside to do go through my own wardrobe.

This may surprise you, but I don’t have a lot of clothes…I practice what I preach, and this challenge has only reinforced my opinion that you don’t need wardrobes bursting at the seams to create lots of different looks. I know that this was only a seven day challenge but I’ve discovered lots of new outfits, and have really enjoyed playing around with my clothes and it’s made me realise that I need to put some more time aside to re-asses my own wardrobe.

Today I wore my jeans, because I could. It feels good to be able to wear them again but I will admit that when it came to deciding what to wear with them, I found I was faced with much more choice than I’d had over the last week. This explains why I ended up wearing the same cardigan from the last post.

I’m going to miss doing my challenge so I think I may have to set myself another in the New Year…any suggestions?

The final day!

Monday was the last day of not wearing my favourite jeans; I couldn’t wait to get back into them on Tuesday, although after doing this I think I’ll be wearing them a lot less. My final day wearing anything but jeans was spent with two friends doing some last minute shopping and drinking hot chocolate. It’s always great to see them, they both run their own personal styling business too so we always have loads to talk about. It’s great to be able to talk about work, both good and bad and know that they understand, it’s a great support to have and a special friendship too.
Kate and Kirsten are two of the most stylish girls I know so I feel like I have to make an effort each time we meet, well, I don’t really feel like I have to, I love to…any excuse to dress up!

I knew it was going to be cold so had to think carefully about what to wear. Normally jeans and over the knee boots would be my choice, but…well you know the score, I couldn’t wear them. I’m loving dresses at the moment so chose this lace dress from Oasis. It was one of the few things I bought this season and I’ve not worn it as much as I’d hoped, so I thought I’d try and make it work today. I’m always, ALWAYS, complaining of cold feet so in an attempt to prevent numb toes I wore the dress with thick tights and these shoe boots with chunky socks. My feet were definitely not cold.

You probably know by now that I have a penchant for anything leopard print. I’ve got leopard print shoes, bags, belts, dresses and this cardigan. I’ve even got a leopard print wash bag and garden chair thanks to friends. I’m trying to cool it with the leopard print a bit as I think I wear it a tad too much, but I couldn’t resist it today.

I quite liked this look, and it was warm and comfortable which is always a bonus!

Day six of the challenge, not long to go now!

I’m actually quite enjoying pulling together outfits that don’t involve my jeans. I don’t’ think I realised how many outfits I could make without them. I don’t own many skirts (maybe two, or three at most) so will automatically just pull on a pair of trousers as I find them the easiest thing to wear when I’m short of time (which I often am). For work however, I tend to wear dresses. They’re so comfortable and are easy to dress up if I need to but I realised that I don’t really wear them outside of work, and I’m not sure why. So this outfit is my Sunday/day six look. I’m wearing a Whistles dress that I’ve had for ages and tend to keep for work, but instead of pulling together quite a polished look with pumps or heels, I’ve dressed it down by wearing my biker boots (again) and a cropped jumper…no one would know it’s a dress.

It’s great to be able to demonstrate how easy it is to dress an outfit down. SO often, I see clients wardrobes full of occasion wear that they’re saving for best. It’s such a shame to have something you love hanging in the wardrobe unworn, especially if it’s something that makes you feel great when you wear it. Why not experiment a little, there’s always a way to dress something down so it can be worn more casually. Try teaming a LBD with thick tights and a chunky cardigan or pull a jumper over the top for a great casual look, you never know, you might discover a whole host of new outfits!

Yes I know, my seven day challenge officially ended yesterday and I’ve only posted four days’ worth of outfits.

It’s not that I’ve not documented my outfits, I have! I’ve just been ploughing on with my work, trying to get everything finished before I go away for Christmas so haven’t had a chance to post the outfits. I know I could have just uploaded the photo and have been done with it, but I’d rather talk you through my outfit and why I pulled it together.

So here’s my outfit on day five of the challenge. You’ll probably recognise this dress; it’s the one I wore to the My Street Chic fashion bloggers party. I loved wearing it, and had bought it with the intention of wearing it during the day as well as for evening so wore it again on Saturday. This was a day of last minute Christmas shopping, followed by food out so I wanted to make a bit of an effort, but still be comfortable and warm. To make the dress more casual, I wore it with my black biker boots and threw a chunky cardigan on top. As a pear shape, I often struggle in winter to find knitwear that flatters me – most knitwear is quite loose and long, so I find it cuts me across my hips – highlighting the widest part of me. This cardigan however is perfect; it’s cropped so highlights my waste. I’ve had it for years and have found it so useful for throwing over pretty much any outfit.

Day Four & The My Street Chic Bloggers Xmas Party

I’m starting to realise that the challenge here isn’t so much not being able to wear my jeans, but more trying to blog every day...it's Sunday now and I've got Friday, Saturday and today's outfits still to post. I’m also finding photographing my outfits everyday difficult, I’m enjoying documenting my outfits, and it’s great to have a record of them for future reference (it's something I do for my clients so it’s great to know it works) but, I’m not a natural in front of the camera, I’m not comfortable there. I don’t know whether to smile, look away, look down…I don’t know how to stand or what to with my arms. So please ignore my awkward looking poses and look at the outfits instead!

Anyway, that’s definitely enough rambling! This is my Friday outfit and day four of my challenge. The morning was taken up with personal shopping trip so I needed to pull together an outfit that was polished and comfortable, yet still ‘me’. It’s also unbelievably hot in the shops at the moment so I try not to wear too many layers as I only end up carrying them. It's great being forced to look at my wardrobe in a new light, I’m pulling together outfits that I may not have seen had I not done this, but it’s taking me longer to get ready in the morning.

I bought this skirt last year and its great perfect for work; it’s comfortable and goes with loads of different tops. I like it with this blouse for work, but I can dress it down with knitwear if I want to. This blouse was one of my best purchases this summer, I didn’t buy many items last season but this has definitely been my most worn item.

Friday evening was the bloggers Chrismas party at Java arranged by the brillint My Street Chic. I was so nervous about going as I’ve never been to one before and didn’t know what to expect. And while I love blogging and am trying to put aside more time to do it, I do feel like I’m only playing at it. But I shouldn’t have worried. I went with Chrissy from Just So Fashion and had such a great time. Gina and the team put together an awesome night. It was really lovely to meet the people behind the blogs I read and so inspiring to see everyone’s different outfits - a refreshing change from the usual party uniform that I see at the Christmas party.

Day three and still no black jeans!

Today was rather more hectic than planned. I spent the morning in Cabot Circus prepping for a shopping trip I’m doing tomorrow and then returned home to find the computer broken…I mean completely broken, it won’t start. My other half is still in my office trying to sort it out. ALL my work is on there so I’m feeling VERY VERY stressed right now. Luckily, I have access to my parent’s laptop, so I can still blog and access my emails.
I wore this dress from Zara all day. I bought it a couple of years ago and have found it a really useful item. I can wear it on it’s own, layer tops underneath it (I chose the peterpan collar again today, but a pussy bow blouse works well too) or team it with cardigans or jackets. As it was so cold today, the only sensible option was to wear my faux fur coat (of course :)).

Day two

Well day two and I’m already struggling. I’ve spent the day at home in the office where I’d normally cosy up in jeans and furry boots, but I’ve had think of something else to wear. I nearly wore leggings and boots but felt that this was probably cheating as it’ so similar to my skinny jeans, so in the end I went for my leather skirt.

I bought this last year and didn’t wear it as much as I’d have liked, mainly because I didn’t feel I had quite the right shoes – well I think my pumps go but they’re no good outside when it’s freezing cold…any suggestions would be great! I thought I’d dress the skirt down with a check shirt and chunky cardigan, it was actually really comfy, perfect for a day in the office.

It’s been quite a productive day today, I caught up on all the admin that’s piled up over the last few days, walked Hendrix – twice (it was snowing, I loved it!) and was a guest on mystreetchic.com’s live web chat all about getting the perfect party look. No Black Jeans, Day 1

Today is the first day of the challenge set by my husband for me to go for seven days without wearing my favourite “wear it all the time” item of clothing - black jeans. I had a new client today and spent the morning sorting out her wardrobe. I’d normally chuck on my black jeans and a pretty blouse as it’s not unusual for me to end up scrabbling around on the floor searching for clothes at the back of the wardrobe. But today that wasn’t an option...
Instead, I opted for this blue skater dress from Whistles teamed with shoe boots. I’ve had this dress for a while and I’ve worn it loads, so I thought I’d change the look a little by wearing a peter-pan collar t-shirt underneath it. I love the way it changes the look of the dress and makes it a little more girly. It does take some time to arrange it so it’s comfortable though. The belt I normally wear with this dress vanished when I was rushing around on a shopping trip with a client. It was one of those ones that just ‘pop’s’ together so I was bound to lose it eventually. Anyway, I ran out of time to find another belt so had to grab this one, it’s a little too big for my waist so I tried to make a feature of it...I think it works?

When I arrived home, the weather had gotten really crazy and I was frozen, so I layered my new favourite chunky jumper over the dress and added this scarf. I’d forgotten how difficult it is to take decent photos inside when it’s dark so apologies for the poor photography skills. I’m in the office all day tomorrow so hopefully I’ll be able to make the most of the daylight.

Yummy Preserves

One of the really great things about my job is that I get to meet so many interesting people. One of the first clients I had when I started my business over three years ago is well known in the world of preserves...if you know a thing or two about jam then you’ll probably have heard of Vivien Lloyd.

She makes the most divine jams and has just finished her first book, ‘First Preserves’. Last week I was delighted to be invited to the launch of her book at Topping bookshop in Bath. It was lovely to see Viv again and to partake in a spot of yummy jam and chutney tasting (her raspberry jam was my absolute favourite).

First Preserves is a great introduction to the world of preserves and is so easy to understand. Each recipe has step by step illustrations, so you can see exactly what your jam should look like at each stage, it’s jam packed (see what I did there!?) with information. I could have done with a book like this last year when my hubby and I decided we were going to make homemade gifts for everyone for Christmas. We made sweet chilli jam, whisky marmalade and Vivien’s apple chutney, it took forever to find the perfect recipes and, as we used the internet for most of them, the instructions were pretty sparse. Luckily, our gifts went down a treat, it was a lovely experience making them, far more enjoyable and rewarding than franticly buying present’s last minute like we normally do.

Cooking is a relatively new thing for me; I used to help my mum in the kitchen when I was little but that was relatively short lived.

Busy lives and tight budgets have long been my (very poor) excuse for lack of culinary skills. However, my jam making last year re-ignited a love of cooking and since then I’ve been spending far more time in the kitchen. This year I’m going to make these Christmas cupcakes which I spotted on the very inspiring I love Crafty blog

Seven day challenge

This post was my husband’s idea. I was complaining to him that I have nothing to wear since I took my favourite black jeans to the dress makers to be repaired. He just looked at me and said “you always wear them” then promptly challenged me to go for a whole week without them. “It would make a great blog post!” he said.

As a personal stylist, confessing that I might be stuck in a bit of a style rut is pretty hard to say. I spend my life pushing others out of their ruts, how can I possibly be stuck in my own!? While I do wear most of the items hanging in my wardrobe and am the master of mixing and matching, I guess I do fall back on my black jeans far too easily if I don’t have time to pull together another outfit. So, with this in mind I’ve decided to take up his challenge. I’ve got a quieter work week this week, so hopefully I’ll have the time to document my journey daily.

I’m actually a little nervous, not least because it means I’ve got to upload at least seven outfit posts, but also because it feels like I’m being tested. I do think it will be a great thing for me to do though, and it might give me an insight into what my clients go through - but with only myself for advice! So, I’d love it if you got involved in this, I know I’ve got some very stylish readers so would love it if you shared your thoughts and advice or, even better, if you joined me!

Charlie Boots opens in Bath

I spend so much time in the shops, researching and taking clients shopping that after a couple of months I can get a little fed up with seeing the same things over and over. Don't get me wrong, I really love my job and the high-street offers plenty of choice and pretty much every taste is catered for, but sometimes I just want to see something a little different...maybe that’s why I love scouring vintage shops and antiques fairs so much?

I was starting to get that familiar feeling again (well it’s been a couple of months of nonstop shopping) but a press release about local ethical fashion store Charlie Boots landed in my inbox just in time to inspire me all over again.

For those of you who don’t know about Charlie Boots (and you really should!) it’s an edgy, ethically-minded shop showcasing a fabulous mix of fashions, accessories and things for the home. I actually blogged about Charley Boots a while back and am pleased to say that this gem of a shop has gone from strength to strength and has recently opened in Bath, YAY!

I really recommend visiting this new boutique whether it’s for some unique Christmas gifts, or a little treat for yourself. Glorious Grunge

So, eight months on and my husband and I are still living with my parents. It’s quite scary how quickly the time has passed, when we packed all our worldly belongings away, we didn’t anticipate they’d be there for this long.

We visited our stuff in storage the other day to try and find our winter clothes that we’d packed and thought we wouldn’t need. We were trying to think if there was anything else we wanted to take out while we were there but it struck me that we couldn’t really remember what was in the boxes, and didn’t seem to miss much of it either. It just goes to show how little we actually need.

There is one thing I'm really missing. Whilst my winter boots would be pretty useful right now as pumps don’t really cut it in this weather, I can do without those. It’s our music that I miss the most. I love music; it takes me away to another world...or fills my head with memories. It reminds me of awesome times (and the not so good ones) and great friends. It can really affect my mood.

When we got back in the car after managing to find some warmer clothes, Al handed me a CD and said ‘thought you might like this’. It was a Soul Asylum CD, a band I loved when I was 15. Listening to it took me straight back. I was really into grunge when I was at school and if I’m honest, I still am!

I’m a bit of a rock chick at heart and love all things Grunge, Metal and Rock, but having said that I think I’ve got quite an eclectic taste in music. I think Tori Amos is amazing (I was lucky enough to see her play a while back, it was an emotional gig) and have all No Doubts albums. I love hair metal (yes, I did just admit that) and Led Zeppelin is one of my favourite bands, but I also like Funk, Soul and sometimes, old school hip-hop! I don’t know what anyone else thinks but I think that’s quite a mix.

The music I love always has some influence on my style. At school and Uni, Courtney Love was a big influence on my style. I’ve always loved the girly dresses toughened up with messy hair, leather jackets and the obligatory bright red lipstick and when I think about it, there’s still an element of that in my style now. The only difference is that I’ve had to develop a more polished version of my old style...the flamingo pink hair I cherished at Uni will never return, but at least I did it while I could.

Oliver Bonas opens in Cabot Circus

This week is flying by, I can’t believe it’s Thursday already ! I’ve spent most of the week shopping with clients, which I love doing, but it’s starting to get sooooo busy in town now. I’m really starting to miss the mid week lull that I normally take advantage of.

I made the mistake of taking a client shopping yesterday during the strikes. We’d had it booked in for a while but it dawned on me as I queued into Bristol on the M32, that town might be a little busy. My initial fears turned into reality as I drove around the city centre trying to find a car park that had space. All the car parks were completely full and I had to drive back and forth between them until eventually one of them opened the gates and let me in. Despite this somewhat stressful beginning to my day, the shopping trip was a success, (we even managed to wangle the HOF discount that wasn’t starting until the following day). When I’d finished the shopping trip, I thought I’d take the opportunity to do a spot of Christmas shopping. It had taken me long enough to park so I thought I might as well stay.

My Mum has almost finished her Christmas shopping, and I’d barely given it a thought until yesterday. I know it’s only 1st December, but not only has my Mum bought all her presents but they’re all wrapped and ready for despatch! As you can imagine, this has just highlighted my lack of organisational skills and has left feeling a little panicked. Well, deciding to stay back after my shopping trip to start the mammoth task of finding the perfect gifts was a great idea and ended up beign rather little less daunting when I spotted this fabulous new shop. Gerry Webber is long gone, and in its place is my saviour this Christmas, Oliver Bonas. I found something for my Sister and Mum in less than five minutes, that’s got to be a record!

The inside of the shop is light and spacious. It’s full of gorgeous home ware, cute dresses and jewellery. This is their first shop to open outside of London, and is a great addition to Cabot Circus.

Warmth, Style and Sensitive skin.

I’ve been meaning to write this for some time now. It was suggested to me by one of my lovely clients who suffers from psoriases. when I met her a few months back, she was finding it so difficult to find outfits that not only gave her the coverage she wanted, but that also made her look and feel fabulous. It was really starting to get her down. I suffer from Eczema in the winter months, I get red flaky patches on my face, arms and legs and cannot wear ANYTHING with wool in it as this just makes everything worse. If you've got sensitive skin it can be almost impossible to keep warm and look stylish. But not completely. I’ve picked up a few tips over the years and have learnt a lot through shopping for my clients.

Layering is crucial. Invest in a good selection of cotton tops in a variety of sleeve lengths and necklines. These will act as a barrier between you and the irritating fabrics that are in abundance over winter. I find a lot of clients struggle with layering, and to be honest it can be hard to master. The proportions need to be right, colours need to work together and it needs to flatter your shape. My advice is keep the ‘base layer’ fairly simple, and if possible, a similar colour palette. For example, if you're wearing black jeans then team these with a black camisole and then start to layer on top. This avoids the different layers looking a mess, creates a column (so can be slimming) and will tie your outfit together. H&M, Hanro, American Apparel and Whistles are all great places to source your layers.

Invest in a good blouse. They’re everywhere this season and despite what you might think, there is a style to suit every shape. It might just be one of the most versatile items you invest in this season. It can be dressed up for night, dressed down for day, and is perfect for work. Silk is lovely against the skin, it’s soft, loose and so comfortable which is the most important thing if you’ve got sensitive skin. One of my favourite outfits at the moment, is a feminine silk blouse teamed with a really chunky knit cardigan, it enables me to wear wool without it irritating me. For work, team a pretty blouse with a pair of wide leg trousers. And for night try a sheer number over skinnies and towering heels.

Try to avoid wearing red or pink. If your skin is red and angry wearing red will only enhance this. Instead, opt for blues, greens or purples.

Invest in cashmere, it’s much softer than wool and doesn’t irritate as much. Trust me, this isn’t just an excuse to indulge, it really doesn’t irritate as much. Cashmere doesn’t cost the earth anymore either, try H&M and Topshop for a less expensive selection. Some cashmere is even suitable for machine washing!

Wrap up in scarves. When you can’t wear wool it can be so hard to keep warm, so it's worth having a great selection of scarves to wrap up in. If you're struggling to find non-wool ones then try doubling up some of your cotton scarves to make them warmer.

Christmas Pop-up Party at Cabot Circus

I know this isn’t fashion related, but I’m all for supporting local talent and just have to share this with you. If you haven’t sorted your Christmas presents or cards yet (let’s be honest, who has!?) then you need to get yourself down to Cabot Circus tonight.

This year, the run up to Christmas has seen over 100 local artists come together as part of ‘Pop-Up Bristol’ - a new initiative from Made in Bristol that has showcased a diverse range of independent galleries and creative talent on the high street for the first time, adding a new dimension to Christmas shopping at Cabot Circus this year. The pop-ups offer the opportunity to purchase quality gifts and one-off pieces by up-and-coming artists.

Tonight, Pop-Up Bristol will be hosting a party to celebrate the one-month countdown to Christmas at 6pm across their three temporary festive galleries at Cabot Circus - Drawn in Bristol, Pop-Upfest and Smithson Gallery & Gifts.

The event will offer guests a fantastic opportunity to see and purchase all the brilliant artworks the shops have on offer and will also feature live drawing and music. There will also be a chance to meet all of the diverse and talented artists involved in the project along with some exciting special guests.

How to look good (nearly) naked - Part three- What’s the best style of underwear for your shape?

Well, this is the final instalment of a three part feature that I pulled together for Andrew Jackson and his Viva Boudoir photography package. In the other two posts I talked about the importance of wearing the right underwear, and about how understanding your body shape and its proportions will help you make informed decisions about which underwear is going to be best for you.

Now I want to take this a step further and arm you with the information to go out there and choose underwear that will not only give you the support you need, but be flattering too.

For this you not only need to take into consideration your body shape, but also your bust shape. Everyone’s breasts are different in shape; some are closer together and some are fuller, so it’s really important that you choose the right shape bra to give you the best support and shape.

Bust shape

Full or heavy breasts that are full above and below the nipple.
Opt for a full cup, plunge or soft cup. The key is to avoid styles that dig into the breasts and creating bulging.

Long/shallow breasts that are shallower on the top and fuller from the nipple down.
A full cup or firm balcony style will prevent wrinkling at the top of the cup due to it not being filled.

Opt for styles that will add curves and softness to your shape.

Oh Leopard print, leopard print how I do love thee! Yes, my favourite kind of print is indeed the animal kind, but I know I’ve got my work cut out if I’m to persuade the rest of you to give it a go.
Despite what you might think, animal prints are actually quite versatile. A pair of leopard print shoes can add some edge to a girly floral dress and a snakeskin bag will bring your LBD stampeding into this season. But if you’re going to make this trend work for you, then you’ll need to consider your own style. If you’re a classically chic dresser, then a simple belt will be the perfect way to introduce the print to your outfits. If you prefer a quirkier style, then mix things up a little, why not clash animal with stripes?

I want to show you two very different ways of wearing animal print while at the same time push myself out of the orange-brown-leopard-print-rut that I’ve got myself into (I’m always pushing clients outside their comfort zone, so I guess it’s only fair that I do the same to myself). This dress by Biba does just that. While it’s very much covered in animal print, the colour and style is a little less obvious and dare I say it, sophisticated.

How to look good (nearly) naked. Part 2 - Is the fit right

I’m sure you’ve heard the statistics: “around eighty percent of women are wearing the wrong size bra”, but how important is this? Well, if you’re wearing the wrong bra you’ll not only get terrible back ache and appalling posture but you’ll not be making the most of your figure either. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve lifted a clients bra straps to reveal a waist that’s been hiding for years! Wearing the right underwear will not only be more comfortable but can make you look slimmer too.

So are you in the right bra? How can you tell?

• Do the cups of your bra ride up when you reach up?

• Do your bra straps constantly fall down?

• Does the strap across your back ride up?

• Does your bust bulge out of the cup?

• Does you bust fill the cup properly?

If any of the above sound familiar, then you’re not wearing the right size. My advice is to get yourself booked into John Lewis or House of Fraser for a bra fit. Once you know what size bra you need you can start to think about which styles will work best for you but I’ll talk more about that in part 3!

As a personal stylist I’m always learning and I love sharing my newly discovered tips and knowledge with my readers. So when I was approached by fantastic local photographer Andrew Jackson to come up with some styling hints and tips to feature on his blog and help his clients look their best for their Viva Boudoir portrait shoot, I couldn’t say no!

It's essential you wear the right underwear everyday as it ensures your clothes fit correctly, and are the most flattering they can be. But when you’re being photographed in your underwear it’s even, more important that you look and feel you best!

Here's part one of a three part feature I pulled together for Andrews’s blog, to help his clients find the perfect underwear, best fit and most flattering style for their portrait shoot.

Part 1

Choosing the right underwear.

Thanks to the likes of Gok and Trinny and Susannah, I’m sure you’ve all heard about dressing to suit your shape, and some of you will know how to do this, but if you’re not wearing the right underwear it all goes to waste. You’re underwear forms the foundations of your outfit. If you don’t get it right, your clothes will be ill fitting and unflattering.

Before you can start to address what underwear you should be wearing, you need to undress and take an honest look at your figure. Don’t use this as an opportunity to point out all the parts of your body that you’re unhappy with, instead (and it’s not as hard as you might think) put on a more positive hat and acknowledge your best bits. For example, you might have a great waist, or fabulous legs.

Next, look at your proportions. Are your shoulders narrower than your hips? Do you have a long body or long legs? What do you need to do to balance out your proportions and create the perfect hourglass shape? Once you’re armed with this information, you can start to make an informed decision about what underwear is not only going to give you the support you need, but be flattering too.

I’ll be discussing what underwear is best suited to which shape in part 3, but for now here are some hints to help you determine your shape

Neat column shapeColumn figures are fairly straight up and down. Shoulders are in proportion to the hips and they generally have a small bust.

Curvaceous hourglass shape Hourglass figures are curvaceous with a generous sized bust. Shoulders are in proportion to the hips and they generally have a small waist.

Broad apple shape Apple shapes are broader on the top half than the bottom half. The waist is less defined and they generally have fabulous legs.

Curvaceous Pear shape Pear shapes are smaller on the top half than the bottom half. They will have a small bust and a tiny waist.

Last night I spent the evening surrounded by beautiful people, champagne, and lingerie at The Private Vintage Club in The Opium Bar in Bath. Normally I head to local fashion events on my own, but this time my husband came with me. Can’t think why....maybe it was the thought of the lingerie models that would be shimmying down the catwalk?

I’d never been to The Opium Bar before but I think it might be my new favourite place to head on a night out. The decor is gorgeous with vintage furniture set against seductive lighting and painted ceilings. Unfortunately I turned up fashionably late which meant that all the seats had gone by the time we arrived. We had to make do with standing at the end of the catwalk which actually ended up being a great spot. We were near the photographers, the bar and the lovely Christina Sim from www.justsofashion.co.uk.

We enjoyed Champagne and Mojito’s while the models showcased beautiful lingerie from Hannah Dulcie and fabulous vintage dresses from Scarlet Vintage. They looked amazing.

Despite the Mojhitos I managed to take quite a few photos and even attempted a short video. I won't subject you to all the photos, just my favourites.

Bristol Fashion Week

I was delighted to be invited to Cribbs Causeway’s fashion show again this season. I’ve been to a few local fashion events recently and have started to see the same friendly faces. Working for yourself can get a tad lonesome, especially if you’re stuck behind a computer for a large part of your working day, so it’s great to get out and meet other fashion bloggers. This time, we decided to meet up for a coffee and a catch up before the show started, it was great to see Gina from MyStreetChic.com, their new student ambassador Harriett and Sarah from Ship Shape. Hopefully, next time we’ll be able to get a bigger group of us together.

This season’s show was as I’d hoped - well styled and brilliantly choreographed. It kicked off with fabulous fashions from John Lewis. I have to just say at this point, that John Lewis’s fashion department is getting stronger and stronger with each season helped by the likes of Whistles, NW3 and Reiss (I can feel another post coming on...watch this space). The outfits didn’t disappoint, bold prints, tweeds and coloured tights created a brilliant concoction, think heritage but with a twist. I loved these burgundy tights teamed with pillar-box red shoes (apologies for the appalling photo – must invest in a decent camera). The men were sporting tweed jackets and denim, with coloured shoes adding a splash of personality.

French connection were up next and in stark contrast to the previous burst of colour, we were treated to sharp tailoring and sultry silhouettes. Dark colours highlighted the sixties shapes creating a striking collection.

Phase Eight embraced clashing prints, a favourite of mine (see my outfit post here). People are often scared to mix prints, but when it’s done right it can look brilliant. If you want to dabble in a spot of print clashing then the easiest way is to team simple stripes with a bold star or spot print. As long as one of the patterns is stronger than the other and there is some synergy between the colour palettes – it’ll work. Menswear was from River Island and channelled the Nordic trend. I really liked the clever mix of textures with the chunky knits and oversized scarf’s.

Republic was very much as you’d expect - urban street-wear for men and women that’s practical and on trend. Not my favourite but I can see that it will have big appeal. Gillett’s, checked shirts and denim were uniform, with coloured chino’s breaking up the repetitiveness.

Marks and Spencer’s showcased the sixties trend. Red, black and white was the theme, and patterned tights added a spot of drama. Spots are a refreshing mini-trend this season, hopefully marking a departure from strips which have filled the high-street for years. If you’re not a fan of spots then little stars or tiny birds in repeat is a cute way to work this trend.

The fetish trend had been overlooked until H&M took to the catwalk. The models strutted out in not so easy to wear outfits, but looked fab. The guys looked just as good and sported amongst other items, leather trainers – a great way to dip your toe in the trend. I love the fetish trend that’s around this season; and will be mixing my leather skirt from last year with chunky knitwear and towering heels as soon as the weather’s gone back to normal. When working this trend, try and go for real leather if your budget will stretch to it. Not only will it look so much better, but it will last longer too. In fact I think Leather looks better the older it gets, the same can’t be said for imitation leather.

Wallis looked like they’d transported their models straight from the sixties. Geometric prints, block colours and mini lengths were the theme. The guys showcased Burton’s collections and looked trim in slim cut suits with a nod to the mod’s.

Marks and Spencer showcased a second collection, this time it was less sixties, and more forties.

River Island’s collection was a real mix straight from the seventies. Bold prints adorned trousers and dresses and fur trims were on everything from boots to coats. Prints were clashed and had a real Mary Katrantzou feel to it which as I've mentioned in previous posts, is a favourite of mine. The men clashed plaid shirts with striped cardigans and rust coloured trousers; totaly autumnal.

John Lewis returned to the stage with colour blocking, proving it’s a wearable trend whether you choose to wear a statement dress or to accessorise with a bold bag. The starkness of the colour was cleverly softened by mixing different textures together. The men looked dapper in sharp slim suiting that was set off against bold patterned ties and strong coloured shirts.

This season is set to be a good one. The shops are already bursting with fabulous autumn collections so why not head to Cribbs Causeway and experiment with your own style. But of course, if you feel you’d like some direction then get in touch!

This is one of those love it or hate it trends. But if you hated it last season, then you might find yourself warming to it this autumn, as this time round it’s grown up into something much more wearable and versatile. The fringing from summer is still hanging around, so if you loved it like I did, then you’ll still find plenty of bags overloaded with it. However, the fringed skirts and tops have all but gone and in their place are the far more conventional tassels, dangling from necklines, shoes, bags and belts.

Moderation is the key to getting this look right. Don’t be tempted to wear too many fringed items at once and make sure you keep the rest of your outfit simple. It’s a trend that can be worked into your everyday wardrobe, if you’re careful and choose items that suit your own style.

This bag laden with fringes is perfect for my everyday style. I wanted the bag to blend in with my outfit in a rock chick kinda way, so I’ve teamed it with my black skinnies, silk top, leather jacket and animal print pointies.

Well, this is a bit different! I've literally just finished taking a regular client of mine shopping for her autumn\winter wardrobe and am now sitting in the middle of Cabot Circus, typing this post for my blog live! It's a little hectic and to be honest with you, quite scary. I'm not a natural writer and generally spend ages typing up posts in Microsoft Word, before checking the spelling and pasting it into my blog. To say I'm a little outside my comfort zone is an understatement. Anyway, I'm here to write about the show, not tell you how long it takes me to pull together posts for my blog.

Well, the show was short and sweet and the outfits looked great (bar one that I just couldn't get my head round - blue cord shorts and a pale fringed leather jacket just doesn't do it for me). Fashions from House of Fraser were showcased covering adrodgyny and colour blocking for women, and sharp retro style tailoring and heritage for men.

My favourite look had to be girl meets boy, masculine tailoring for women. I loved the the edgyness of the leather and sharp tailoring contrasted with soft feminine silk and naughty lengths. This outfit was the star of the set. I love the leather shorts - if only I had the legs.

Colour blocking was done in easy to wear shades and even more wearable shapes. Simple dresses were finished off with statement accessories that popped against the outfits.

This colbolt blue dress and sunshine yellow bag looked fabulous and prove it's not hard to pull off this trend.

Mango opens in Bristol

Mango, Mango, Mango, oh how I do love thee! This is one of those brands which never fail to deliver. They seem to be able to pull together catwalk inspired collections that are not only really wearable, but are such a great price too.

Up until now, the only places to buy Mango have been John Lewis and House of Fraser, and to be honest while they stock great pieces, they both carry such small collections that you don’t get the full Mango experience. But things are about to change. On Thursday 29th September, Mango will open the doors of their first stand alone store in Bristol, and I can’t wait.

I thoroughly recommend heading down to Cabot Circus to see the new store, and shop the new collections. I’ve just come back from Cribbs Causeway where I saw, yet another, fantastic fashion show. I’ll be putting up a post about this later but for now, here’s another outfit post. I never really get the chance to wear heels as I spend most of my time running around after clients. Pumps and flat boots are my day to day choice of footwear, but not today! Bristol Fashion Week was the perfect opportunity to dress up and don my favourite heels.

The shops are brimming with autumn/winter stock and while we’re all hoping for some last minute sunshine, in reality it’s not going to happen. Autumn is almost here so it’s time to assess your autumn/winter wardrobe and work out what you need to invest in this season. But, before you head to the shops, why not get a little guidance?

There are two fantastic opportunities to find out what’s in store for us all this season. The first is Bristol Fashion Week, up at Cribbs Causeway and the second is the Cabot Circus Fashion Show. We really are a little spoilt here in Bristol.

Bristol fashion Week

Bristol Fashion Week is always fabulous. The catwalk shows are entertaining (thanks somewhat to the banter between Mark Heyes from GMTV and celebrity hairdresser Andrew Barton), energetic and inspiring. Everything showcased is available in store, so of course it’s inevitable that you’ll not leave empty handed.

Thanks to the wide range of retailers in Cabot Circus and Quakers Friars, the catwalk shows not only showcase the best of the high-street, but you’ll also see the best of the designer brands too. Modern day stylista

Pippa Middleton is turning into a bit of a style Icon. A week doesn’t go by without seeing her in the celeb magazines. And what about those shopping frenzies that follow? They have the power to bring a website crashing down!

I should probably come clean at this point, and confess to not being much of a fan of Pippa’s look, she has a very ‘classic ‘look for someone in their twenties – I prefer something a bit more edgy. However, writing this column has somewhat altered my opinion of her. It’s all too easy to be ‘in fashion’ and even easier to look terrible in the process. Being stylish is much harder; it takes a degree of confidence and an ability to understand your shape and how to dress to suit it best. Pippa may not be at the forefront of the fashion scene, but she’s absolutely got style.

I might even go as far as saying she’s a style icon for the modern day stylista, not only is she photographed wearing items again and again, but she shops on the high-street, most recently at Zara, French Connection and Whistles. She invests in classic pieces, building up a collection of clothes that work hard to earn their place in her wardrobe. She re-works outfits to create numerous looks that unlike some of the regularly papped celebrities, are relatively easy to recreate.

So while I still might not be a huge fan of Pippa’s look (I still think it’s a little old for her) she knows how to build a great wardrobe and develop a style that’s not a slave to fashion, and that’s something to be commended. So if you fancy working Miss Middleton’s style, then these pieces certainly wouldn’t look out of place in her wardrobe.

Gok

Gok was in Bristol again this week filming for his new series. His last series saw him taking on Brix Smith-Start in a bid to show that you really don’t need buckets of money to look good and work the latest trends. But this series focus on Gok’s talents alone, as brings you the best of the high street whether you’ve got a tight budget or a little more to spend. The very lovely Kerry Harris gave me two front row seats for the catwalk show and it was great to be there again.
I took my friend Jane with me which was lovely, as since moving to Bath, we’ve not been able to meet up as much and I’ve really missed that.

There was a good turnout for style guru, Cabot was packed out, there was even the odd declaration of love. The three lucky ladies who had the Gok makeover looked fab and loved every minute of their moment in the spotlight, I’m looking forward to watching their transformation when the series is aired later this month. Unfortunately there aren’t as many photos as I’d have liked for the post, but my camera recently died a death and as it was being filmed we weren’t allowed to use our phones. Here are the best of the bunch.

My Style

I’ve avoided doing outfit posts like this in the past, as I’m not that comfortable in front of the camera (I never know whether to smile or not, or what to do with my arms). However, I’ve recently started taking photos of my favourite outfits so I can pull together a sort of style file - It’s a great way of experimenting and developing your own style and is something I do regularly with my clients but never really put the time aside to do for myself.

My style totally depends on my mood, but generally swings between girly-grunge and rock-chick sass. I can’t get enough leopard print, so this regularly features in my outfits. When I have the time, I love to rummage around in vintage shops and charity shops collecting unique pieces to add to my wardrobe.

I’ve changed my shopping habits in the last few years and now only buy items that I know will mix and match brilliantly, I also try to wear as many of the items in my wardrobe as possible (so you’ll probably see a few repeats). I don’t think my style is particularly unique or fabulous, but my posts encourage you to try something a little different, or even better, to share your ideas and inspire me, then it’s been worth it!

So, here's my first outfit post...

I mentioned my obsession for all things leopard print and I think this outfit just proves that. I guess my Spaniel Hendrix was fed up waiting for me to take him for a walk, as decided to get involved.

Let me introduce you to the fabulous Charley B!

I met Charley at Melanie Giles’s hair salon in Bath, she was so enthusiastic and passionate about what she does and, so good at it, that I thought we just had to try and work together. Since then, we’ve been scheming and have some great things in the pipe lines...watch this space!

Make-up artistry has always been Charley’s passion as she watched her mother, former head of make-up at Glyndebourne Opera House work backstage. The creativity and buzz of her mother’s job fascinated her.

Charley went on to train at The Glauca Rossi School of Make-up in London followed by The London College of Fashion which giving her the skills and confidence to work in the Fashion Industry. She then went on to work on magazines such as Good House Keeping, Red and Grazia building a reputation for creating fresh and modern looks.
One of her regular clients is DUO boot’s which has taken Charley to the South of France, Spain and most recently Norway to create fashionable make-up looks for their advertising campaigns.

When she is not shooting her focus is on Bridal and Teaching women how to apply their own make-up.

Charley’s philosophy is that make-up is fun and creative. After all if you make a mistake with make-up you can amend it, if you buy the wrong shade of lipstick you can mix it with another to make it work. This enjoyment of make-up is something that Charley encourages with every one of her clients.
Me: I love styling myself and putting different outfits together but my make-up tends to be an afterthought. What advice would you have to encourage me to try and be more experimental with my makeup?

Charley: It’s so easy for women to get into a routine with their make-up. It’s becomes like skincare, cleanse, tone, moisturise and go. I suggest that when you look at your wardrobe for a revamp, get your make-up bag and all of your make-up dotted around the house and review this too. Ask yourself some questions: Do I use this? Does it suit me? And more importantly, how long have I had this? Piece by piece detox your make-up bag. Take a picture of yourself without your make-up on. Do your make-up as you usually would from your newly detoxed make-up bag and take another picture, outside in broad daylight. Now compare the pictures. Be honest, what is really working for you and what isn’t. Is your foundation making you skin look enlivened and fresh? If not, get rid of it. Just like I imagine the wrong underwear kills a great outfit, the wrong foundation can let all your make-up down. Once you’ve whittled you make-up down to few bit’s (if any) you think really work for you have a play, and learn the techniques that suite you. The great thing about make-up is you can take it off! So just have fun with it! Soon you’ll know what suites you and have the room and new found confidence to be more experimental.

Me: I have my favourite make-up ‘staples’ – my Bobbi Brown bronzer and my eyelash curlers. What are yours, and what should every woman have in their make-up bag?

Charley: Oh, this is a tough one. Well, for me my make-up ‘staples’ are changing all of the time but at the moment again another Bobbi Brown number with her Shimmer brick in ‘Bronze’. I use this on my cheekbones for a highlight, my eye lids, dellocatage and pretty much anywhere I want that post holiday ‘glow’. I am never without Vaseline, I mix it with lipstick to custom make my own tinted lip balm, I smudge it over eye liner for a wet look smokey eye for gig-going, cheekbones for a bit of a glow, it is a multi use product I am never without.

A couple of staples I believe would be universally useful in a woman’s make-up bag would be a liquid highlighter and a multi use lip and cheek colour. My favourites and staples in my professional kit are NARS Illuminator in ‘Super Orgasm’. This is a product once added to high points of the face or mixed with foundation adds a pretty glow to lack lustre skin, perfect after a late night.

My second one would be Stilla’s Convertible Colour for lips and cheeks. This is the perfect product to reach for when you’re pushed for time but is also a great one for day to day. All you need is tinted moisturiser, Black mascara and this product on lips and cheeks and you’re ready out the door looking fresh and fabulous in no more than five minutes.

Me: I’ve recently come back from holiday where I found it too hot for my normal makeup routine...my make-up slid right off and didn’t match my skin tone once I’d tanned. What do you recommend for those of us off to hotter climes this year?

Basically you want to avoid products with a powder or creamy texture as they will sweat off. Look for waxy, non greasy and preferably water resistant products. With your base skip foundation all together and just use concealer. I recommend Laura Merciers Secret camouflage. This product is waxy in texture so very long lasting in hotter climates. You also mix it yourself to suit your skin tone so perfect for holidays. Use it to even out your skin tone and that’s your skin done. For eyes skip eye shadow because it will just slide off. Instead use a wax based waterproof liner, I love MAC’s, and lashings of waterproof mascara my favourite being Maxfactors false lash effect waterproof formula. Finish the look with a lip and cheek stain. I am never without Becca’s Beach Tint for a water resistant pop of colour that is designed to withstand the demands of the beach.

Me: My make-up is normally quite natural looking but on my wedding day I wanted my look to be stronger without feeling like I was looking at someone else in the mirror. I must admit, this was hard to achieve...I probably needed someone like you there on the day! What’s the most important advice you can give to any bride to be, when they’re deciding on their make-up for the big day?

Charley: Although it sounds cliché the most important thing is to be yourself. Weddings give women strange ideas for their make-up because the pressure is laid on thick to impress. Some brides sit in front of me and say “I want really smokey eyes” or “I want red lips!” when the most they wear day to day is sunscreen, mascara and lip gloss! I know you want to impress the numbers on your wedding day but believe me if you go too far out of your comfort zone you will feel uncomfortable.
Wedding make-up for me is all about making the skin look amazing and then I work on the rest depending on the brides style and the style of their dress. When choosing idea’s for your wedding make-up by all means experiment. For example if your dress has a 1950’s style to it look at going for a Red Lipstick, stain or a Liquid line but try it first. See if you like it, see how people react, take photographs! Don’t just jump in head first, have a play, look through magazines so when you sit down with your make-up artist you have a really good idea of what you want.

Me: Do you have a style icon that influences your own style?
Charley: It’s a bit of a cliché but, Kate Moss. I love the simplicity of her style she oozes off duty model with everything she wears and it looks like her second skin, so comfortable yet stylish, and that is the style I go for with my make-up as well.
Me: Where do you get your inspiration from when you’re working with your clients?

Charley: It depends on the job. If I’m shooting it will be pictures from backstage at fashion shows, prints, textures and colours. If it’s Bridal or my Lessons my inspiration comes from the client sitting in front of me. Every time a woman sits in my make-up chair she tells me everything she hates about herself and usually those things are the first things I actually really like about them. I look at their great features, who they are the way they dress and turn that into a look that works for them.

Me: When I’m helping clients to build their perfect wardrobe, I stress the importance of investing in staple pieces – items of clothing that they’re going to wear again and again. In your opinion, are there any items of make-up that are well worth investing a little more in? And what can you get away with spending less on?

Charley: First investment, your skin. Take care of it, watch it and give it what it needs. This is less about skin care products and more about your health. You need to spend money on your base products more than anything because if you get that wrong it lets the whole look down. I find the one product that women are spending the most on, they should be spending the least amount of money on, and that’s mascara. You should change it every 3 months so it makes sense to spend less and the best mascaras I have used are high street brands my favourites being Maxfactors False Lash Effect and Mabylines Great Lash.

Me: The most common mistake I come across when I’m working is women buying an item of clothing because it looked great on their friend. In your opinion, what’s the most common mistake women make when choosing make-up, and how can it be avoided?

That’s actually quite a common mistake with make-up as well. A woman will buy a lipstick because it looked great on their friend when it’s completely the wrong shade for her. The most common mistake is too many women settle for products that don’t work well enough for them. Part of my make-up lesson is to go through my clients make-up bag with them. Time and time again they will have a product which is the wrong colour or formula for them and when I ask them if they like it “it’s okay” is the response. If it doesn’t work for you, don’t use it. If it’s not exactly right for you, don’t buy it. When I buy an item of clothing I have to absolutely love it and it has to fit like a dream the same goes for my make-up.
Me: Shopping for clothes and styling is second nature to me, but shopping for make-up is another matter entirely! The huge choice is so overwhelming and a little confusing that I never step outside my comfort zone. What advice can you give to others like me who want to experiment a little more?

Charley: I do a lot of my make-up shopping both for myself and my professional kit, online. It takes away the pressure. You can also narrow it down to product, brand, and colour, whatever you are looking for and then you can check it out online for reviews before you buy it. The only things you never shop online for are Base products.
Look for make-up styles you would like to try from a celebrity look, in a magazine, or in a film that you think may suit you. Get a few bit’s online to re-create the look, look up how to do it maybe even try an online tutorial and just give it a go. Make-up is fun, it’s creative and most importantly it comes off so go ahead and experiment.

Me: I love the trend for 50’s style make-up – the strong cat eye style liner as modelled by Lilly Allen on the front cover of Elle magazine this month. Is this easy to do and can anyone carry it off?

Charley: The great thing about this look is yes, it can be adjusted to suit everybody. However it does take practice to get it right. My recommendation is to go for a Gel liner like MAC’s “Black Track” for a strong look or “Dip Down” an Expresso brown for softer take on the look. If you are working on more of a budget try Maybellines new Gel Liner, although it only comes in black it’s great quality and the brush is fabulous! Try using a more precise brush like Bobbi Browns ultra fine eye liner brush or you may work better with an angled brush such as MAC’s 266 Small angle.

First look straight ahead in the mirror and draw on the outer flicks. The Flick should start from the outer corner of your eye and be in line with the end point of your eye brow in angle. The flicks length should be no longer than the halfway point between the outer corner of your eye and the end point of your eyebrow. Once you have got the flicks even on both sides complete line from the inner corner of your eye along the lash line to the end of the flick. The thickness of the line depends on how much lid space you have to work with. If you have a larger lid space you can play around with the thickness if you haven’t keep it skinny enough so you can see equal amounts of lid and liner.

Me: I tend to stay loyal to one make-up brand, is this a good idea, or is it better to mix things up a little?
Charley B: It’s nice to see the same brand in your make-up bag because it all goes together and you feel you can trust the brand. However, different brands will be better for different things and you are seriously missing out if you don’t look elsewhere. Also you could be really over spending on something you could find to be better on the high street.
However if something really works for you, stick to it because it is hard to find products like that. But if something could be better but you keep re-purchasing because it’s a brand you trust you need to get out there and play the field a bit because something fabulous and possibly cheaper could be waiting for you.

Jumpsuits

I’ve always given jumpsuits a wide birth. It’s not that I’ve never liked them, truth be told, I’ve always secretly fancied wearing one. They look so effortless and carefree. The reason I’ve stayed away from jumpsuits is because I thought they’d do absolutely nothing for my pear shape and whilst I like the look on others, I wasn’t sure I could pull it off.

So When Rachel Nott the editor of Folio magazine asked to write about how to work a jumpsuit, the challenge was set. I thought I’d never find one to flatter me, so I spent an afternoon hunting down the perfect all-in-one. The choice is immense and you’ll be relieved to hear they’re a far cry from the original eighties styles. Think fifties glamour and seventies boho instead. Eventually I found this simple, wide leg style that skims my hips and highlights my waist (something all pear shapes MUST do). My voyage into the world of jumpsuits had begun.

In one afternoon, I’d gone from avoiding jumpsuits, to wanting another. Are you persuaded yet? Go on, trust me, there’s a style out there for everyone. Team with gladiator flats and a scarf for day. Or dress up with chunky heels and statement earrings for an alternative to your LBD. Give them a chance, you never know, it might just become one of your summer staples, it has mine!

Finding the perfect swimwear

I know it’s getting a little late in the season to talk swimwear, but I’ve been asked about it so much in the last week and the truth is that we all leave shopping for swimwear until last minute anyway. It’s one of those things we put off doing until we absolutely have to!

I recently recently came back from my holiday; it was fantastic, super hot and so relaxing. I must admit though, that before I went it took me a stupidly long time to hunt down the perfect swimwear. Like most of you I’m sure, I have my body hang up’s and the thought of bearing all on the beach fills me with dread. I don’t enjoy looking for swimwear at the best of times, changing room lighting is never flattering and if you search online, you’re faced with beautiful bodies modelling gorgeous bikini’s that just won’t look the same on me...it’s enough to make me give up before I’ve started! Eventually I plumped for a fifties style ensemble, I think it worked.

While on the beach I noticed how it wasn’t just me that felt a little un-comfortable lying there. Most of the other women around me seemed to feel the same - sitting down before exposing their swimwear in an effort to go un-noticed, or gradually peeling off the layers to show a little skin at a time. This prompted me to write a post about choosing flattering swimwear in the hope that it might help those of you who also find bikini shopping a little stressful. Read on for my top tips...

Book yourself in for a really good spray tan a couple of days before your holiday to give you a boost of confidence when you first step into your bikini. If this scares you a little, there are some really good moisturisers that give you a little tint everyday, this way you can build up a tan to the colour that you want.
Think about your shape; what points do you think are your best? I know it’s easy to sit there and list the things you don’t like about your body, but instead, think about what your best features are it’s far more rewarding. Understanding this will help you to choose a bikini or swimsuit that flatters you and makes the most of your fabulous curves. Now think about what you need the swimwear to do? If you’re big busted then you’ll want something that offers good support and lift. If your pear shaped then you’ll want to emphasise your top half, broaden your shoulders and draw the attention away from your hips.
Choose a set that gives you the support you need. The range of swimwear that comes in cup sizes has really improved and will make all the difference when you’re going in and out of the pool. Freya and Fanatasie have some lovely sets.
If you’re a different size on the top and bottom (as a lot of us are) then go for bikini separates that can be bought in different sizes, rather than a swimsuit. Not only will it ensure the perfect fit, but it also means you’ll have different styles to choose from too so will be able to pull together the most flattering bikini set. If you’re not up for showing your midriff, then tankini’s make a great choice.

I know you wouldn’t normally think of swimwear when you want to enhance your figure, but there’s some fabulous swimwear out there that can cinch you in and give you the most fabulous waist – some even make you look like you’ve dropped a dress size. Although a bit more pricy, it's well worth the investment.

If you don’t feel that you fill the cups as you’d like to, then consider purchasing some bikini pads to insert in the cups. They’ll give you the little boost you’re after.
Think about your cover-up. This is as much of an important part of your sunbathing days as the actual swimsuit. How many times have you walked to the pool bar and wished that you had something to wrap up in? Sarongs are the obvious choice, but if you want to try something different then why not opt for a sheer maxi dress, a play suit or even just an oversized shirt.
Top your poolside-look off with a hat or head scarf, some stylish sunglasses –aviators are my favourite and add a sweep of shimmering bronzer for the finishing touches. I know this all may sound a little much but if it means you’re going to feel confident by the pool then it’s got to be worth it!

I spend a lot of time sorting out client’s wardrobes and helping them to build a hard working collection of clothes that they can develop each season. I’m often faced with wardrobes bulging with less-expensive items that are tired and ill fitting and, in my opinion, not money well spent. The key to getting the most for your money and creating the perfect wardrobe, is to have less items, that mix and match cleverly and to invest in the staple pieces - the items that are going to be worn again and again.

Each season make a list of the items you need to purchase and set yourself a sensible budget. It’s worth putting a large proportion of your budget towards the staple pieces on the list, the items you’re going to wear most of the time. Purchasing good quality, higher end products that will last for years will enable you to gradually build up a collection of key items each season and to pull together a hard working wardrobe that can be easily updated with a few less expensive, on-trend items.

Bristol is the ideal city from which to build this perfect wardrobe. Just up from Harvey Nichols is John Anthony, two floors of men’s clothing, for the guy who likes to be noticed. Paul Smith is sold here, along with other quirkier names like Vivienne Westwood. If you’re looking to add something a little more quirky to your wardrobe, then The Garment Quarter is the place to go. It opened last year and stocks both womenswear and menswear. It’s is a great boutique, offering edgier designers such as Twenty8Twelve by S.Miller and Comme Des Garcons PLAY.

Bristol really does have it all now! Adding top end designers to the already eclectic selection of vintage, high-street and independent boutiques has put Bristol firmly on the map as a shopping destination and makes it the perfect place to invest in the perfect capsule wardrobe.

British Designers@FashionCapital offers retail support to London Fashion Week designers alongside new talent. In line with the mentoring and support work FashionCapital provides to the UK ’s emerging fashion industry the boutique provides an outlet for London Fashion Week designers to sell their previous season stock at discounted prices and for new labels and graduates to showcase and sell their designs – often for the first time.

Since opening in September the project has engaged with the local community, up-and-coming designers and students studying at Bath Spa University giving them essential insight into the tough fashion industry. The feedback from customers has been incredibly positive - they love the unique product offer, the designer discounts and the fact they are supporting UK based businesses.

FashionCapital operates on a not-for-profit basis and only takes a small commission from each sale to cover running and staffing costs; a large proportion of each sale goes directly to the designer. To operate at this level, as the company has in the South East, the outlet needs the backing of the local council and to be awarded discretionary rate relief. British Designers, 14 Milsom Place , Bath has been operating on the understanding that the council would not charge full commercial rates in light of the company’s not-for-profit status and that it engages with the community and local educational bodies. However, after 10 months of waiting for a response Bath & North East Somerset council have concluded that British Designers must pay full commercial rates.

We are currently appealing against this but if the council refuse to alter their decision we will be forced to close immediately and will no longer be able to support designers with a retail outlet in the South West. With the weather hotting up again (fingers crossed that’s not just put a stop to that!) is it getting harder to decide what to wear to the office? I was invited to discuss this on BBC Radio Bristol last week and it prompted me to pull together this post.

When the weather’s gorgeous and the sun’s shining, it can be difficult not to head to work looking like you’re off for the weekend. So, how do you pull together a look that’s both comfortable in the warm and stuffy office, but that keeps you looking and feeling cool? More importantly how do you stay fresh in the heat and ensure you’re still taken seriously? Flip flops and short shorts just won't cut it.

If you’ve found yourself staring blankly into your wardrobe first thing in the morning, clueless as to what to wear to work when it’s 21 degrees, then read on. I’ve pulled together the hottest summer work wardrobe, to keep you cool, nine to five.

1. This ruched blouse from All Saints, Cabot Circus is a pretty choice for the office. Wear it tucked into a skirt (9 ) or tapered trousers (12 ).

2. If you keep fabrics loose like this shirt from TFNC, Cabot Circus, you’ll remain cool but won’t fail to impress in the style stakes! I love this colour, it goes so well with the nudes and navy we can’t get enough of this season.

3. This pretty spot blouse is also from TFNC, they have some perfect office wear pieces in this season. Either wear this loose over a pair of capri pants, or team it with shorts like these from M&S (4)

4. Most people consider shorts unsuitable for the office, but if you opt for a pair that finishes just above the knee, they make a stylish and practical choice! Wear these from Marks and Spencer, Broadmead, with a pair of flats (16 ) or a low heel (13 ), add a plain top (5 ) and finish with a loose jacket (6) for a tres chic look

5. This top from Whistles, Park Street (5) is a wardrobe staple. It will go with trousers and skirts and can be layered with a jacket for days when you need to be a little smarter.

6. This draped jacket from Miss Selfridge, Broadmead, will layer over a variety of tops. The relaxed, light weight fabric will be perfect for hot days and the light colour is so versatile.

7. For days when you need to dress for success, consider a dress like this one from LK Bennett, Quakers Friars. The fabulous shape will hug you in all the right places, and the the capped sleeve will keep you cool. Finish the look with some tan accessorise (15 ) (17 ). Or, to dress it down, just add the pink draped jacket (6 ) and a pair of nude sandals (13 ).

8. Inject some fun into your work wardrobe with this cute blouse from NW3, John Lewis. It’s another versatile choice as it can be worn with skirts (9 ) trousers ( 12) and shorts ( 4).

9. I love this pencil skirt from A/Wear, Cabot Circus, this colour will go with pretty much anything and the style is perfectly suited to the loose blouses and striped tops that are in abundance this season. It can be smartened with the addition of a pair kitten heels like these from Dune (14)

10. This outfit from Whistles, Park Street is spot on for work-wear! Consider splitting up the pieces and mixing them with other items. For example, try wearing the trousers with the NW3 blouse (8), or the top with the camel pencil skirt (9)

11. I’ve mentioned this shirt from Warehouse in a previous post but it’s just so perfect and so versatile that I had to include it in this one too. It will look fab tucked into the Whistles trousers (10) and accessorised with the nude sandals from Carvela (12) but it will also work with the grey trousers from Oasis (12) teamed with the flat brogues from Schuh ( 16).

12. Grey is a great colour for the summer months. It’s so much softer than everyone’s favourite – black. It compliments this seasons soft ballerina tones and looks smart at the office. This pair from Oasis, Cabot Circus, (12) will go with all the tops I’ve picked here, and can be worn with heels or flats.

13. Sandals are a must when it’s beautifully hot, however flat sandals don’t quite hit the mark when you’re heading to the office. Something like these nude sandals with a low heel from Carvela available at KG in Quakers Friars (13), however are perfect.

14. Everyone should have some leopard print in their wardrobe, but if you’re worried about over doing it then opt for a pair of print shoes. These kitten heels from Dune, House of Fraser (14) will turn your skirts and trousers into something more ladylike and the heel is so practical for wearing all day.

15. These platforms from Reiss, Quakers Friars give you height without the pain! They’ll work well with any work wardrobe and will keep your feet nice and cool. Make sure you paint your toes – how about a bright coral?

16. Heels aren’t a must for work; sometimes it’s nice to wear a flat shoe. This pair from Schuh, Cabot Circus, makes a brilliant choice, not only do they look smart, but they’re a versatile style.

17. I’m loving tan accessories this season, I find them so versatile. This bag from French Connection, Quakers Friars (16) would make a great purchase.

Astonishing new magazine

Astonish “is a visually-driven independent fashion & art magazine...a movement, a calling for creative freedom amongst artists worldwide to create captivating masterpieces” and the imagery really is strong. The magazine is set to showcase the best up and coming talent around, so is the perfect place to discover something new. So...do you want to see what I’m raving about? Here you are then...

This next post is long overdue, from Last Friday in fact!

I was invited to the Oxvamp fashion show last Friday and couldn’t say no. It was the perfect opportunity to get some inspiration for my own shopping trip the following week...a day going charity shop shopping around Bristol for some new quirky items to add to my wardrobe.

It was also the perfect opportunity for a girly night out with my best friend and sister (who lives too far away, in Buxton). After some wine and very yummy cakes that looked too good to eat we took our seats for the show.

As I said in an earlier post, the fashion show showcased unwanted items from the Oxfam Hub in Portishead that had been lovingly re-styled and re-vamped by UWE fashion students and Orange Street studio members. UWE Fashion student’s designs were the first to hit the catwalk. It was wonderful mix of military styling and big textures. Some outfits were quite avant-garde but others were much more wearable, see what you think:

Next up were the Orange street studios re-vamping.

Both created new and interesting pieces out of the unwanted items that had been donated and it was great to see such unique pieces walk down the catwalk. Things get very repetitive on the high street, and (to my disappointment) disposable fashion is becoming more and more popular. Shows like this are so important because not only do they inspire us all to try something new, but even more importantly they remind us that it’s possible to shop responsibly and ethically, and on a small budget.

Magic mirrors

I’m sure most of you have read or heard that some shops are going to be introducing ‘magic mirrors’ into their fitting rooms, but have any of you experienced them?
I’ve been in shops where they’ve obviously tilted the mirror away to create an elongated trimmer looking figure, but these curved mirrors are a new one on me. Apparently a new breed of curved mirrors that give shoppers the impression they’ve dropped a dress size are making an appearance on our high streets… this is only my opinion - but doesn’t it all seem rather like a con? How many times have you got home, excitedly clutching your new purchase, only to try it on in the comfort of your bedroom to be overcome with disappointment that it just doesn’t look as good as you thought it did?

I know the retailers will argue that there’s no harm in making shoppers feel more confident in the fitting room (Something that I know a lot of women don’t feel when shopping) but what about when they get home? Doesn’t it end up knocking their confidence even more?

We should embrace the fact that we’re all individual and different shapes. Every one of us has something good to show off and we shouldn’t need a fancy mirror to convince us to buy something. It’s just not true that to look good, we need to be slimmer; we just need to have some body-confidence.

My advice for confident shopping is to understand your body shape; I don’t just mean whether you’re pear, apple, hourglass or column, I mean really know your shape. Take some time to assess yourself in the mirror, be honest and don’t focus on the parts of your body you’re not too happy with. Try and look at your whole figure – from top to toe. What are its proportions? What are the assets you should be showing off – waist/legs/boobs, you get the idea. Now think about how you might balance out your proportions, for example if your top half is smaller than your bottom half then consider wearing clothes that will enhance your bust and broaden your shoulders, and avoid clothing that makes your bottom half appear bigger than it is(pleats and detailing around the hip area are a definite no no).

Once you start to understand your shape you can begin to balance out your proportions and most importantly, start to enhance your best bits! So, next time you go shopping and you think the mirrors are being unusually kind, ignore them. If you’ve picked styles that enhance your assets and balance out your proportions then you’ll look fab in the fitting room and at home.

If you’ve not had a chance to go to any of the fashion shows that have been going on this month then all is not lost. Cabot Circus will be stepping into the new season in style with a series of free catwalk shows celebrating the best of spring and summer on Saturday 2 and Sunday 3 April.

As always, they will showcase the hottest trends from the new season collections, bringing together the best of the high-street and designer brands. With so much to choose from on the high street, theses shows are the perfect opportunity to consider how you might work the season’s trends and discover where to go to update your wardrobe.

I can’t watch the shows this weekend, but thanks to the lovely Kara that won’t stop me sharing some images with you afterwards.

Back to Bristol

Now that I’m living with my mum and dad in Bath, I’m finding it very hard to resist girly days out with my Mum. Yesterday, I gave myself a well earned day off and drove Mum to Bristol for a spot of shopping, coffee drinking and deli eating. I know I've only been living in Bath for a week but I have to admit I really am missing Bristol. I miss being in walking distance to my friends and I miss the Bristol buzz. Bath is lovely but it’s so different to Bristol.

Our day of shopping started in Clifton Village and The Arcade, a part of Bristol I love rummaging in. It’s changed since I was there last; there are some great new shops. I went into a gorgeous craft shop – I Love Crafty. It was full of lovely presents perfect for Mothers day but with my mum was in toe I couldn’t make any purchases. I’m pleased to say however that they have a website so I’ll be visiting it later today before it’s too late.

Next I walked straight into fab vintage shop Clifton Vintage Boutique (I took some photo’s but they really don’t do it justice – note to self – must buy a decent camera!!) and spotted a really cute, blue, floral fifties dress, I wish I’d tried it on now; my wardrobe could really do with an injection of this seasons florals!

After the delights of Clifton Village, we jumped back in the car and drove to Park Street to visit my favourite shop Whistles. I must have tried on half the shop but was lucky to have a very patient sales assistant. I was naughty and made a couple of purchases, a blue shift dress, perfect for Personal Shopping trips, and a high waist pleated skirt that fit’s like a glove and will slot seamlessly into my wardrobe. Being a pear shape I love this seasons fifties inspired skirts that are springing up everywhere.

On our way home we popped to Cribbs Causeway, and then home for a much needed cup of tea. It was a long day but really lovely. I’ll find it hard to resist more girly days out – and they’re a great excuse to go back to Bristol.

New Hobbs store

I know...three posts in one day is unheard of from me! Well, I’ve got some catching up to do as I’ve been offline for far too long. The main reason is that I’ve been busy sorting out wardrobes and taking lovely clients shopping, but the other reason is that I’ve been in the process of moving house. I’m pleased to say that everything went to plan and we completed on Friday so things are starting to get back to normal, well kind of, my husband, dog and I are now living with my parents so it’s not quite normal, but it’s very nice all the same.

My office has taken some setting up, I hadn’t quite realised what an undertaking it would be but thankfully it’s done and so I’m able to pay my rather neglected blog some attention and start to get through the huge mound of admin that’s piled up.

So, I’ll stop rambling and will get on with my next post of the day, and this is, as promised, all about Hobbs.

Hobbs is a brand that I regularly use for clients, I find that it suits a range of people and mixes fabulous wardrobe staples with fashion items. So when I heard that they were opening a standalone store at Cribbs Causeway I was over the moon, anything that makes my life a little easier and my client’s wardrobes a little better is always a winner.

For those of you who don’t know Hobbs or haven’t been in for a while, it’s what I’d describe as quintessentially English with a little dash of quirkiness.

This season’s collection is so strong and I love their NW3 range, that’s got to be my favourite collection of the season so far. Unfortunately the NW3 range isn’t available at the new store, although I’ve got my fingers crossed that it makes an appearance. For now it can be sourced from John Lewis and the Hobbs store in Bath (which by the way is huge and full of lovely things).

Calling all recessionistas!

If you love fashion and love a bargain, then you’ll not want to miss the Oxvamp fashion show being held on Friday 1st April at Bush House.

This unique event will showcase unwanted items from the Oxfam Hub in Portishead that have been lovingly re-styled and re-vamped by UWE fashion students and Orange Street members. The event is in honour of Oxfam’s online store where you can get some great pieces without the hassle of travelling to one of the Oxfam boutique stores (of which there are only 7 in the UK!).

More and more people are adding unique pieces to their wardrobe that they’ve picked up from charity shops, however not enough people are aware of the gems they’re missing out on, it sometimes only takes a little tweak here and a small alteration there to turn someone else’s junk into your favourite treasure.

The re-vamped items will be on the catwalk and are expected to be very avant-garde and unrecognisable from their original state, it’ll be impossible to leave without being inspired to create your own masterpiece. If sewing isn’t your strong point then don’t worry, the pieces from the show will be making available to purchase on the online store.

For the lucky recessionistas who manage to get a ticket, not only will you be treated to a fabulous fashion show , but you’ll be able to indulge in some yummy cupcakes and wine, and of course, will receive a goodie bag. I can’t wait to see what saunters down the catwalk and promise to feedback after the show.

Bristol Fashion Week part two

There was a dramatic opening for this seasons fashion show, it started with a very talented violinist (who also happened to be one of the models - some people have all the luck!) playing beautifully against a dramatic backdrop of imagery taking us from the dark and dreary winter months to a happier, lighter and warmer mood of spring. A great start to what turned out to be Cribbs Causeways best catwalk show yet.

The styling is always superb and this season was no exception, with bags and bangles in abundance the models looked great. We were treated to twelve scenes illustrating every trend, floral, ladylike, seventies glamour and soft neutrals, you name it, it was there.

All scenes were highly energetic with perfectly co-ordinated choreography, but my favourite scene had to be scene seven which had everyone rocking out to Bon Jovi, and one cute model doing some seriously awesome air guitaring.

My favourite pieces from the show are (surprise surprise) the animal print halterneck dress from Warehouse and a gorgeous grass green shirt dress from Hobbs NW3 available at John Lewis – which reminds me, Hobbs has opened a standalone store at Cribbs Causeway, but I’ll tell you about that later.

Mark Heyes and Andrew Barton were sporting the latest trends, dressed head to toe in light toned suits. Andrew Barton opted for a retro look and temaed a pale blue suit with a floral shirt. Mark Heyes added edge to his slim fitting khaki suit with a pair of studded Louboutins sneakers (very jealous).

The show was testament to the fact that fashion at Cribbs Causeway is getting better and better, it’s well worth a visit whether you’re looking for the latest fashions or something a little more classic – there’s something for everyone. Bristol Fashion Week

I can’t believe it’s that time already, it seems only a couple of months ago that we were treated to a fabulous showcase of what Cribbs Causeway had to offer for the winter season, and now it’s time to discover what lovelies we can add to our wardrobe for spring/summer!
I can’t wait; I’ve been so busy updating client’s wardrobes so I’m really looking forward to taking some time out to think about what I might add to mine. I always find the fashion show’s at Cribbs Causeway a great source of inspiration, as they feature the latest trends in an easy to wear way.

This season the show features 18 catwalk fashion shows hosted by the TV fashion stylist Mark Heyes and celebrity hairdresser Andrew Barton. The hour-long fashion shows preview the best designer and high street pieces from stores at The Mall, including John Lewis, Hobbs, Marks & Spencer, Jigsaw, Kurt Geiger, Fat Face, French Connection and Coast. So if you’re looking for some ideas this season, and want to find out where to buy the latest items, along with how to wear them then head over to Cribbs Causeway between 23rd and 27th March for some top tips, entertainment and of course, a goodie bag.

Fashion show tickets cost £8.50 or £13.50 for front row seats and are available from www.mallcribbs.com or The Mall’s Information Desk. Tickets include pre-show refreshments, a fantastic goody bag and discount vouchers for stores in The Mall.

My favourite spring pieces so far

Top ten items this season...so far.

1. This picture doesn’t do it justice, but this dress from Phase Eight looked fabulous on an hourglass client. Will also be fab on an apple shape or column figure.
2. This shirt from Oasis looks so good tucked into a pair of dark jeans. It’s a great price and looks quite designer.
3. These high waist trousers from Hobbs are a fab fit and a perfect choice for work wear.
4. I LOVE this jacket from Whistles! It’s on my wish list.
5. I’ve found these Karen Millen boot cut jeans to be a great shape and fit on almost any shape. They have a real ‘premium denim’ look for those of you who can’t stretch to J Brand or Paige.
6. This shirt form Karen Millen, is very similar to one they did last season, and I love it. The shape and detail is fab. A great one for pear shapes.
7. This skirt is such a great colour for this season and it’s so versatile. The shape is fab as the detail on the waist brings the eye in.
8. This swallow print blouse from Warehouse is great teamed with skinny jeans, even better tucked into high waist jeans.
9. If you’re up for working the colour block trend then this dress might be for you. The shape is great for highlighting and enhancing a fabulous waist.
10. This knitted biker cardigan is from Karen Millen, it’s an easy way to work the biker trend.

The Bristol-based episode of Gok’s Road show will be aired on Channel 4 tonight! Here are some more photos from the finale of Gok’s stylish week in Bristol. The not so great one’s are mine (it was freezing and I was shivering) and the other’s are courtesy of Elaine Teh.

As always, Gok styled three women. I have to say they looked gorgeous as they shimmied down the catwalk. Make sure you’re watching Channel four at 8pm to see who won the fashion face off.
